There is no doubt in my mind that Summer is one of the most well loved seasons out there. The sun shines down on us, school has ended, swimming pools are filled with noise and laughter, and beaches are packed to the brim of families who want a break from the heat that the season brings. I mean, how can someone be sad when the sun shines so loudly? In contrast to the gloomy skies of winter or rainy season that normally bring in seasonal depression, summer brings joy to the hearts of many.
You may be wondering: Mel, where exactly are you going with this? Well, I wanted to highlight the fact that I don’t really hate summer. After all, I am very much capable of describing it with pretty words and fondness on my tongue. However, as much as summer is a season filled with laughter and memories, it’s also a season filled with heat— one of its biggest flaws, in my opinion.
I live in the Philippines where the sweltering heat of the sun hurts my skin, where the heat index reaches the 40s, and summer might just be the worst season to go outside. It may be a good season to grab a cool drink, take a dip in the pool, or go to the beach, but it isn’t a good season to walk bear foot in the sand because it burns; it isn’t a good season to walk to your favorite places, and it isn’t a good season to break your AC in because a fan just isn’t enough when it is blowing hot air directly in your direction because of the humidity and temperature of the outside.
So, you may not agree, but I truly believe that the heat is one of the worst things this season brings to us.
Clearly, it’s also getting worse because of global warming and our heat index is rising nearly every year but I’m not enough of an idiot to think that I can discuss the topic of this scientific phenomena in detail because I’m not an expert on that but please, if for the sake of enjoying a summer with actual breeze and less heat of the sun, we need to take care of our planet. After all, it is also God’s creation— something he has given to us to take care of.
Anyway, that’s it for my first blog post. One day, I’ll probably regret that it wasn’t as poetic as I wanted it to be and that it’s really just a rant that has been fueled by the fact my AC completely broke in the middle of summer and I can’t get a good sleep at night because of it, but I did highly enjoy writing about the deadly heat of the sun and summer in general. Hopefully, I’ll be able to write something more meaningful in the future.
Much love, Mel.
